Invariably once someone gets really excited about social media – they tend to flip on a switch. It’s called the “over share” switch!
So how can you still remain authentic and personal not over share on Facebook and Twitter? Here are a few simple do’s and don’ts:
Do’s:
Share what you would at a dinner party when you meet someone for the first time.
- Where are you from?
- What area do you live in?
- Married? How long? Kids?
- Your job – how long? What do you specialize in?
- Hobbies/interests
- Organizations you are passionate about
- Recent travels
Don’ts:
- Tell your whole life story – no need to mention every move you make!
- Going into too much detail about your family – follow your own comfort level. Decide if you want to reveal ages, names, photos – some people are more comfortable with that that others.
- Other people’s kids – ask the parent’s permission first
- Your specific home address
- Political or religious – this is another personal choice, but I tend to avoid these topics on social media because they can be very polarizing topics.
